Nib Lathe

This is the "nib lathe" that sits on my writing desk all the time. It does feeder work, sometimes becomes a color pencil sharpener.

Our SKEWER  ; several abrasive wheels of 5" long mandrel fits inside of a tail center hole.

When I first got a mini lather from Amazon, 2 screws of the tail center were loose. Luckily I was able to put my junk screw collections from various broken tools to good use. I've never been so surprised to find that they were the perfect size πŸ₯°
Some newer machines may not need my process. If you don't have any, go and ask Ace Hardware for a thumb screw. Mine is M5. And it needs thread parts, T slot nuts underneath. Mine is T nuts with 2 holes 35mm. (These are not immediate necessary pieces.)

These are items for setting up a nib lathe, small modifications may be required, ex. replacing speed control AC cord. Amazon links listed below..Always check details and solve issues with Amazon. If you already have a regular horse power lathe, you'll be able to use our SKEWER.

Step 1.
A SIMPLE MINI LATHE : Choose a lathe with drill chuck without any attachment

Black lathe bargain ***Just check a drill chuck is not jammed. Black lathe, Better one?, Blue lathe,  I've got 2 but both are different each otherπŸ˜…

Step 2.
SPEED CONTROL : Good deal, with display.  Recommended
Or  USB cord 1000ish RPM only

Step 3.
GRINDING & POLISHING :  NIB LATHE Starter Kit : Skewer type
The best compound -Highly recommended!

Next Step 4,5,6-
Important:
Swiss diamond grinding wheels are the best thing to invest in..for 'Next Step'(..It may need much higher speeds.) Don’t buy cheaper ones, they are fake or splayed.

If the inside is mostly filled with plastic glue it’s made of, which will become off center with heat. A precise rotary by mandrels is crucial. Generally grinding should be ‘right and left’ ..equal. Sometimes a knife edge works well.

Yellow. Reshaping. Smoothing broken tip. (Recommended)
Blue is for medium, disc
Diamond disc. RoughingπŸ’Ž

The loupe, my version. { 50mm lens shows nibs clearer with beautiful smooth bokeh }

I call this flat round tipping 'pancake' and will never reshape to another.

Sideworks :

Polishing pins add hydrophobicity to the nib and feeder. Works on detailed area. Good addition. πŸ“Œ

Dressing stone or this...makes the wheel rotate precisely, can straighten out Irregular shapes.πŸ’Ž

Be a specialist...Portable battery bank + lightingπŸ’‘πŸ•―βš‘οΈπŸ”‹

We will need one like this.  *Portable AC battery bank + LED light. A Lower position works better. It can be set higher.   Lists

Angle finder is to measure and replicate specific angles.  πŸ“  More

Wooden (Acacia) 14”   Lazy Susan. Turntables are for a single disc bit...Rotates vertically and has good nib-wheel contact.

{ A part of our validation summery }  These are the wheels coarse to fine presumably being used for more steel industries. Generally a feedback finish by #1000. Know that alminum oxide - hard but not so brittle plus tightly rubber-bonded means they grind quite harsh on a nib's tipping.
